VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
VOC’s are significant greenhouse gases via their role in creating ozone and in prolonging the life of methane in the atmosphere.
Furthermore VOC’s are suspected to be carcinogens and may lead to leukaemia through prolonged exposure.
Volatile Organic Compounds:
Mostly hydrocarbons (CxHx)
- Isoprene (C3H8)
- Terpenes (C10H15)
- Methane (CH4)
Some from industrial solvents
- Benzene, toluene, xylene
- vinyl chloride,
- Plastics,
- synthetic rubber,
- paints
